When you think of fashion, you think of sleek design, elegance and sophistication. Some of the world’s most iconic logos come from the fashion industry, so what does it take to create a beautiful logo design that will stand the test of time? We’re going to dive deep into what makes a great fashion logo and the techniques you should use to make your brand stand out.
Find iconography that will stand the test of time
Trends come and go all the time, but your fashion logo design should look timeless, no matter what season you’re in. If you have a logo that needs redesigning every few years, it’s not effective. It needs time in order to become instantly recognisable in the eye of your customers. Take the Chanel logo for example, we couldn’t believe that the interlocking C’s have been trademarked since 1925 and they’ve been iconic all over the world ever since.
Create a logo that reflects your brand
Your logo should give the customer an instant impression as to what your brand is all about. If your company is sleek and elegant or modern and rebellious, shout about it! Versace’s logo is busy, which is usually a big ‘no-no’ in the world of design, however in this case it suits the brands garments and opulent style down to a T.
By contrast, Supreme’s streetwear brand is modern and simplistic. Its bold typography and block-red background screams about youth culture which reflects their company’s values.
Create a logo that works in a range of colours & sizes
Designer clothes come in many shapes and sizes which is why it’s super important for your logo design to be legible in a range of colours and sizes. The H&M logo is an awesome example of that, the simple typography and solid colour throughout means it can be tweaked into grayscale, negative or any other colour without losing any readability.
A great example of a simple logo working well in a range of sizes is the iconic Converse logo.
You can see here that due to its simplicity, the logo can be scaled to almost any size without sacrificing readability.
Incorporate abstract styles into your design
Your fashion logo design doesn’t have to be grounded in reality, you can use bold shapes & geometry to make your business stand out. The Adidas logo design uses strong lines that feature on all of their products, Levi’s uses an abstract banner shape and GAP’s eye-catching blue square is instantly recognizable (which is why a lot of people made a big fuss when they tried to redesign it back in 2010).
Use something recognizable in your design:
By contrast, if your brand won’t benefit from abstract design, or you want to go with something a bit more classic – using something grounded in reality that the human mind can recognise easily is another great way to go. Logo designs such as ‘La Coste, Ralph Lauren and Burbury all have images that are both timeless and instantly relatable.
